For many of us, Chanel is the epitome of timeless French glamour and “Parisian chic”. Gabrielle Coco Chanel, the founder of the Chanel brand, was one of the most iconic fashion designers of the last century. Her approach completely changed the style of women’s dressing. Chanel brought many significant designs to the world of fashion, such as women’s trousers, the tweed jacket and pearl earrings. Many designs have remained an inspiration for Chanel’s current collections as well as for many other fashion brands.
Coco opened her first boutique in 1910. It was a hat boutique that helped Coco establish a reputation among the famous actresses of the era. In 1913, she began selling her first collection of spats made of cotton, which had previously been used for men’s underwear. This approach was groundbreaking for fashion and created a space for positive change in the relationship between women and their bodies. Just 2 years later, in
1915 Coco Chanel opens her first
fashion house, where it employs 300 workers and creates its first Haute Couture collection. In 1918, Gabrielle Chanel bought a building in Paris, where she moved her fashion house. This building was not only an atelier and boutique, but also a salon and workshop. The layout of the interior is preserved in the building to this day.
In 1921, Chanel N°5 perfume first saw the light of day. Two years later, Chanel launched its first make-up collection and in 1927 its own cosmetics collection. The furore surrounding the iconic perfume grew in 1952, when American actress Marilyn Monroe said that Chanel N°5 was the only thing she wore to bed.
In 1955, Gabrielle Chanel brought another iconic piece to the market – the 2.55 handbag. This functional quilted handbag with a gold shoulder strap became one of Chanel’s timeless pieces that is still part of collections today. Equally iconic for Chanel is the tweed jacket, which first arrived in the collection just a year after the 2.55 handbag.
Chanel continues to produce pieces that later became very key for the brand, such as the two-tone pumps.
After Gabrielle Chanel’s death, Karl Lagerfeld took over as creative director in 1983 and remained there until his death in 2019. Chanel’s current creative director is Virginie Viard.
The Parisian chic style of Chanel is for us to this day a great
an inspiration and a representation of elegance. Here at
concept store you will find several pieces inspired by Coco Chanel’s designs. If you want to create a Parisian atmosphere at home, we recommend the film Coco before Chanel.
